In finding that overturns the conventional wisdom, scientists are reporting the first discovery of progesterone, a female sex hormone, in a plant. Until now, scientists thought that only animals could have progesterone. The prgesterone remember it is a steroid hormone, secreted by the ovaries, which plays a major role in preparing the uterus for pregnancy. The discovery is reported in the Journal of Natural Products
. "The importance of unequivocal identification of progesterone can not be overstated, m entre 
the biological role of progesterone has been studied extensively in mammals, the reason for its presence in plants is less clear."
The researchers suggest that progesterone, like other steroid hormones, could be an old bio-regulator that evolved billions of years ago, before the appearance of modern plants and animals. The new discovery could change the scientific understanding of evolution and function of progesterone in living things.

Pauli and his colleagues used two laboratory techniques powerful nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy, to detect progesterone in walnut leaves town.
